NJTA Improvement to Interchange 10, Bridge Widening/ Pavement Reconstruction Contract No. T300.188

(January 2013 – July 2014)

MAKS Engineers provided Construction Support Services to PKF mark III Contractor on the Design of the Cantilever Sign Structure and its drilled shaft foundation. They have followed the guidelines from the FHWA Publication “Drilled Shafts: Construction Procedures and LRFD Design Methods” (FHWA-NHI-10-016, May 2010, NHI Course No. 132014).

This Sign Structure at Exit 10 to be installed on the local roadway owned by NJDOT was originally designed on spread footing following the NJDOT Design Standards. At the same time, all other sign structures on the NJ Turnpike property were designed with 54” diameter drilled shaft foundation. The contractor requested to use the Drilled shaft foundation for this Sign Structure also on NJDOT-owned roadway instead of spread footing so that the setup for all Sign structure foundations is similar, thus saving the time and cost of this construction item. MAKS Engineers designed this Drilled Shaft foundation to get it reviewed by NJDOT.

DOT approved the design and therefore, all the Sign Structures for this Contract (T300.188) were designed with 54” diameter drilled shaft foundation. Also designed a light pole at the ramp following guidelines from current AASHTO Standard Specifications for Structural Support for Highway Signs, Luminaires, and Traffic Signals.
